MTV’s “Awkward” Adds Two New Gay Characters

Awkward, MTV’s hit teen comedy, is about to begin its fourth season and adding two new gay characters—Palos Hills students Theo (Evan Crooks) and Cole (Monty Geer). But don’t expect them to be all warm and sensitive.

New showrunners Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler told Buzzfeed:

- As gay writers, it’s obviously important to us to have gay characters on a TV show, so we looked at what we hadn’t seen on TV yet, and we liked the idea of these gay guys whose sexuality wasn’t the most important thing in their lives. They are a bit obnoxious, kind of in the tradition of Stifler from American Pie or Beavis and Butthead — they just happen to be gay.

Other additions to the show include a new transfer student from Africa played by Kofi Siriboe and a new love interest for Matty, played by Elizabeth Whitson.

How will the Theo and James shake things up?  We’ll have to wait until April 15 when Awkward returns to MTV.
