MK Nobilette, 20, is unbelievably the show's first singer to come out while they were on the show
It might be 2014, it might have gone on for over a decade, but American Idol has never had an gay contestant open about their sexuality from day one.
In its 13th season, the US reality show finally has one.
MK Nobilette, 20, is the first to speak about her sexuality to the American Idol cameras.
After performing Ed Sheeran’s ‘The A Team’ during Hollywood Round, Nobilette sat in front of the judges to learn her fate.
‘All these questions come up: How do you fit in? Do you not fit in? If we think it, what will America think?’ judge Harry Connick, Jr. asked.
‘I’m very obviously gay,’ she said, as Connick Jr and other judges Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez Harry Connick Jr, Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez.
‘There are always gonna be people in America and everywhere else who will definitely hate me.
‘But I think that in the last two years there have been a lot of things that have really changed that, and have made it a positive thing.’
‘Thank goodness,’ Connick Jr responded.
A pause, and Lopez said: ‘We think the world is changing, and we think you could be an American Idol.’
Nobilette was then put through to the top 15 girls.
While American Idol has had gay contestants before, most notably season two runner-up Clay Aiken, they have only came out after the competition.
