Tom Daley named biggest inspiration in sport to UK teenagers

The Olympic diver topped a poll that sought to find out which public figures inspire UK teenagers the most, three months after he revealed he was in a relationship with a man

Olympic medalist Tom Daley was named the biggest sporting inspiration to UK teenagers last night (1 March) at a National Citizen Service (NCS) event in London.

The awards were based on the results of a poll run by the NCS, a government initiative that aims to improve young people’s confidence, teamwork and leadership skills through a series of challenges and community projects.

Daley, who revealed he was dating movie writer Dustin Lance Black last December, won the sporting inspiration award, while rapper Tinie Tempah was named the biggest inspiration in fashion.

Daley, 19, had prerecorded a message that was played at the ceremony. He said: ‘It’s amazing to be part of all the amazing effort you are putting in, so keep up the good work.’

The Splash! mentor took bronze in the London 2012 Olympics, and holds gold medals from the World and European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

Supermodel Lily Cole won in the ‘most inspiring digital innovator’ category for founding Impossible, a social network that encourages people to help each other for free.

Nina Nesbitt hosted the event in Brixton’s O2 Academy and received the inspiration in music accolade.

Around 70,000 young people have taken part in the NCS scheme since it was piloted in 2011.
