Pope Francis: ‘Gay civil unions may be acceptable’

Pope Francis has hinted that he may be accepting of gay civil unions.

Speaking to Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, the Pope discusses the necessity of some civil unions for economic reasons.

However, he made it clear that he believes that marriage is between a man and a woman.

He is quoted as saying: “The secular states uses civil unions to accommodate various arrangements of living together, driven by the need to regulate the economic relationship between people, such as ensuring health care.

“These are pacts of coexistence of various kinds, of which I could not identify the different forms. We have to look at different cases and evaluate them in their variety.”

Pope Francis has previously said that he is not here to judge gay people, marking a shift away from the strongly anti-gay views of his predecessor.
