Tom Daley wins British diving championships, debuts new dive

Daley takes the gold but his new "firework" dive needs work.

OutSports reports:

Tom Daley won the gold medal in the 10-meter dive at the British championships this weekend, even though his new "firework" twisting dive fizzled.

Daley, the openly gay diver gunning for a gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics, debuted the "firework," a dive never performed before. It consists of 3.5 somersaults with one twist pike. However, the dive scored just 61.2 points, Daley's worst score of the competition.

"It's there, it just needs a little bit more competition practice," he told the BBC. With the Olympics still 18 months away, there is plenty of time for him to fine-tune the dive. Daley's next event will be an international competition in China in mid-March.
