Sprint, KC, Cerner honored for LGBT equality

An array of big Kansas City-area employers will be honored next week for their commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.

The Human Rights Campaign, an LGBT civil rights organization, said a record 23 area employers will be commended for their egalitarian operations during the eighth-annual LGBT Corporation Celebration of Equality Seminar. The event is set for 6 p.m., March 26, at Hallmark Cards Inc.

“The fact that you have so many businesses in Kansas City, Missouri, that have demonstrated their commitment to LGBT equality and to their LGBT employees and families says a lot about the city and the area,” campaign spokesman Paul Guequierre said. “It also shows that times are certainly changing and this country as a whole is shifting toward equality across the board.”

Guequierre added that many companies also are recognizing the influential clout of the LGBT community

“We know that the LGBT community has a large buying power — estimated to be $830 billion a year,” he said, referring to a  Witeck Communications report. “So companies understand that equality is not only the right thing to do, but it’s also good for business.”

The civil rights organization based the ratings on its  Corporate Equality Index, which takes into various company policies, practices and benefits for LGBT employees.

Those area-based companies and employers to be honored include:

Kansas City, Mo., 100 percent rating

Sprint Corp., 100 percent

AMC Theatres, 100 percent

Shook Hardy & Bacon LLP, 100 percent

Bryan Cave LLP, 100 percent

Hallmark Cards Inc., 90 percent

Cerner Corp., 90 percent
