Homophobic mother's response to kid's birthday invite a hoax

New York-area radio hosts apologize for fabricating story about a pair of gay dads who were chastized over young daughter's birthday party invitation

It was a hoax that went viral. A supposed homophobic mother of a boy, ‘Tommy’, who was invited to a birthday party for seven-year-old ‘Sophia’, declined the invitation and had written back to chastize her gay dads.

She wrote back on the invitation card saying: 'Tommy will not attend. I do not believe in what you do and will not subject my innocent son to your 'lifestyle'. I’m sorry Sophia has to grow up this way. If you have an issue or want to speak with me, [phone number].'

Two New York area radio hosts Steve Harper and Leeana Karlson of Long Island pop music station WKJY, also known as K-98.3, have since admitted and apologized for their fabricated story.

The two, who host a morning show, first talked about the note on their program on Wednesday but kept up with the story as it went viral online with many Internet users expressing their outrage at the homophobic mother’s stance.

The DJs also posted the invitation on their Facebook page and invited comments from listeners.

On Friday, Harper and Karlson posted an apology on station's website saying: 'This story was, in fact, totally fictitious, and created by the two of us. This was done without the knowledge of K-98.3 management or ownership.'

They explained that their intent was to spur a 'healthy discourse on a highly passionate topic.'

'We are very sorry that we perpetuated this falsehood, even after it was clear that it had taken on a "life of its own,"' they said.
